Assistant Research Professor Jacob Smith’s book, Minority Party Misery,  has been published and released by the University of Michigan Press.  Minority Party Misery examines the role of minority party status on politicians’ engagement in electoral politics. Jacob argues that political actors pull back from electoral politics as it becomes increasingly likely that they will be in the minority in a legislative body, particularly under conditions of high polarization and party unity… read more about Jacob Smith’s book, Minority Party Misery, published and released »

DURHAM, N.C. -- Even if you can’t name the tunes, you’ve probably heard them: from the iconic “dun-dun-dun-dunnnn” opening of Beethoven's Fifth Symphony to the melody of “Ode to Joy,” the German composer’s symphonies are some of the best known and widely performed in classical music. Just as enthusiasts can recognize stylistic differences between one orchestra’s version of Beethoven’s hits and another, now machines can, too. A Duke University team has developed a machine learning algorithm that “listens” to multiple… read more about Machine Learning Meets the Maestros »

DURHAM, N.C. -- The artificial intelligence behind self-driving cars, medical image analysis and other computer vision applications relies on what’s called deep neural networks. Loosely modeled on the brain, these consist of layers of interconnected “neurons” -- mathematical functions that send and receive information -- that “fire” in response to features of the input data. The first layer processes a raw data input -- such as pixels in an image -- and passes that information to the next layer above, triggering some of… read more about Accurate Neural Network Computer Vision Without The ‘Black Box’  »

Professors David Banks, Karen Kafadar, David Kaye and Maria Tackett have edited a new book on forensic statistics. The book grew out of the SAMSI program on Forensic Science that was held in 2015/16.  That program laid bare a number of statistical concerns regarding the methodology and testimony of forensic scientists, and motivated the editors to collaborate to create the definitive exposition of best statistical practices in the field.   All chapters have been peer reviewed, a requirement of the Daubert standard… read more about Statistical Science Faculty Collaborate on new book »
