Ellen Yuan, BS 2017

Software Engineer at Google, Sunnyvale, CA

How has being a Statistical Science graduate from Duke helped shape you personally and/or professionally?

"I've always been interested in numbers, and I love how you can apply statistics to almost any profession - it's everywhere. And I think that's what inspired me to study stat in college. As a software engineer, while a lot of my job requires coding, we also keep track of metrics, which often times requires me to use my stat knowledge. I think in particular, the statistics program at Duke has a very good community, and it's always great to catch up with my professors and classmates."

What advice would you give students in Duke's Statistical Science programs?

"No matter what you pursue after college, you will find that your knowledge in statistics will always be valuable in some way or another. Maybe I'm biased as a software engineer, but I think especially now, it's also very important to learn how to code. To be able to understand numbers and also program is a strong skill combo and becoming increasingly necessary during this technological shift."
