Coordinator of Undergraduate Training, Research, and Development, Department of Statistical Science

The ideal candidate for Coordinator of Undergraduate Training, Research, and Development in DSS will have a master’s degree in statistics (or a related quantitative field) and the drive and enthusiasm to manage operational, administrative, analytical, and technical details supporting a cohort of outstanding undergraduate students focused on careers in statistical and data science.

The Coordinator will have high-level technical skills, including in data analysis and programming using modern software (e.g., R/RStudio/Markdown, Python, HTML JavaScript). Academic instructional skills in statistical computing and experience in career counseling are a plus. Strong written and oral communication skills and the ability to establish rapport with undergraduate students are required. This position will be a full-time position, with considerable time in the summer spent in program assessment and support for course planning activities.

Specific job tasks may include, but are not limited to, the following.

  • In collaboration with the Director of Undergraduate Studies (DUS), serve as a primary point of contact for undergraduate students with interests in statistical science or who are taking statistical science courses. Serve as primary advisor for all minors and second majors and fill in as needed for faculty members who are on leave. Hold daily office hours in collaboration with the DUS to address student requests and questions and to provide counsel regarding professional development, strategies for success, research opportunities, presentation of research results, and career choices. Work with the DUS and relevant Duke resource personnel to develop and deliver “soft skills” development (e.g., communication, resume writing, leadership, team building, mock interviews, etc.) to the undergraduate students.  25% FTE
  • Coordinate teaching assistants in DSS, including preparation and coordination of professional development activities relevant to delivering high quality instructional content to undergraduate and graduate students. Coordinate evaluation and assignment of teaching assistants across all courses in DSS.  15% FTE
  • Coordinate an archive of teaching materials to ensure smooth transitions when primary course instructors rotate across 100 and 200-level courses. Monitor curricula and materials for consistency across courses and instructors.  <5% FTE
  • Coordinate program assessment activities more broadly, including regular faculty course evaluations, and compile and track graduates with respect to initial and subsequent job placements. Work with the master’s program director to extend the infrastructure for MS alumni development to undergraduate and PhD alumni. Conduct entrance and exit surveys of DSS majors and minors.  10% FTE (higher effort when developing infrastructure for alumni development)
  • Work with the DUS in completing longitudinal “pathways assessments,” with a focus on reproducibility and creation of methodology that may be transferrable to other campus units.  Initial pathways assessments will be conducted of:
    •  paths students take after completing our 100-level courses and of whether they are gaining optimal skills for subsequent work at Duke, and
    • paths through which students identify the statistical science major, and
    • paths that may increase diversity of students seeking the statistical science major.   (25% effort for duration over limited term duration with reduced effort to monitor afterwards)
  • In collaboration with the DUS and other faculty advisors in DSS, monitor majors and their progress through the program via midterm grades and progress towards fulfilling degree requirements. Counsel majors regarding research and honors project opportunities and strategies for selecting projects in the department. Create and implement infrastructure to monitor progress of students working on honors capstone projects to maximize their chances of timely and successful completion. (10% effort)
  • Oversee development of information for dissemination at outreach events such as Blue Devil Days, the NC/SC Open House, Majors Fair, etc. Coordinate schedules to ensure faculty members are present at these events. (<5% effort)
  • In collaboration with the DataFest director, schedule and prepare the DataFest data challenge, coordinate advertising of the event to Duke and local schools, reserve the venue and order meals, handle registration of students, and arrange for judges and visitors to attend.  (15% effort)
  • Perform premajor advising for students interested in statistical science or data science majors.
  • Maintain current content, developing new content as needed, for the undergraduate web pages and in other digital media platforms. (<5% effort)
  • Represent the undergraduate program at conferences and meetings. (<5% effort)
  • Assist with other activities as needed, including planning of graduation events, evaluation of transfer credit and student placement in service courses, and advising the DSS majors union. (5% effort)

The formal job code for payroll purposes will be “Research Scientist” with the working title of Coordinator of Undergraduate Training, Research, and Development.
