Joseph Bejany, BS 2016

Business Manager at Capital One Financial, McLean, VA

How has being a Statistical Science graduate from Duke helped shape you personally and/or professionally?

"My education in statistical science has played a major role in my career at Capital One. In my first two years at the company I partnered with data scientists on multiple projects to build ML models predicting cost and revenue drivers of the credit card business. While working in business roles, I'm able to provide unique perspectives on data strategy and decision making that has impacted tens-of-millions of dollars for our P&L."

What advice would you give students in Duke's Statistical Science programs?

"Duke provides a top-notch education in Bayesian statistics. I'd recommend going out on your own to apply these learnings on real-world problems (i.e. personal projects, online data challenges, etc.) as frequently as possible to better inform classroom learning and future class selection. I wasn't able to fully internalize the opportunities available to me at Duke until I started working and realized the potential for the use cases of my learnings."
