The Linux@Duke Fedora Core 4 distribution installed on the new desktops in ISDS has several changes and improvements over the current operating system install on our older desktops.
Obsoleted Programs
xv
xv is not included in FC4 distribution. It is very old, no longer maintained, and does not compile on FC4.
Workaround: You can use gthumb to view images and convert to translate images from between formats. Read the man pages for each program for details on their use.
Changes in Functionality
Default FORTRAN compiler
The default FORTRAN compiler in FC4 is gfortran instead of f2c and you will no longer need to reference -lg2c in your compile commands.
The GNU versions of both f77 and f95 are also now available.
Adobe Acrobat Reader
Two versions of Adobe Acrobat Reader are installed on our FC4 boxes:
/usr/bin/acroread is Acrobat Reader version 5
/usr/bin/acroread7 is Acrobat Reader version 7
Both are included because there have been reports that version 7 improperly formats some PDF files for viewing and/or printing.
