If you are going to be away for a period of time with only intermittent email access, you may wish to set up the unix vacation program to send automatic notifications to people who send you email while you are away.
We do not recommend the old practice or using a .forward file in your home directory to send your email to the vacation program. This causes problems with vacation replying to spam and other unwanted messages, and may lead you to being blocked from listserves. Instead, we recommend you use the following instructions to add a section to your .procmailrc file to activate vacation processing. The program will not send multiple "out-of-office" messages to the same sender, but just reply to the first message.
When you return and start to catch up on email, be sure that you turn the vacation program off!
