Postdoctoral Positions in Environmental Statistics

Date:
Friday, January 20, 2012 - 9:00am

The Department of Statistical Science and the Nicholas School of the Environment Science at Duke University invite applications for postdoctoral researcher positions to develop techniques for environmental models for global change and forest response. PI's on the project are Jim Clark and Alan Gelfand. Applications should hold a PhD in statistics or ecology, with a strong statistical background. Successful applicants can work on one or more of the following projects:

  • Data assimilation and ecological modeling with wireless network data. This position is available now. It entails model development for high-dimensional inference on weather variables, soil moisture, tree growth, and phenology. Funding through NSF's DDDAS program.
  • Connecting individual plant weather response to regional forest climate response. This project is underway now. Models are being developed to integrate plot-level growth data with regional forest responses to climate change. Datasets include long-term ecological studies and the USFS Forest Inventory and Analysis data. This project includes not only ecologists and statisticians, but also computer scientists. Funding through NSF's CDI program.
  • Macrosystem responses to climate change. Like the previous project, this one merges local tree level responses with regional climate. It involves a network of new data collection sites, including the National Environmental Observation Network (NEON), with PI's from six institutions across the eastern US. This position will be available by autumn 2012. Funding from NSF's Macrosystems program.

All applicants should submit curriculum vitae and research statement and arrange three reference letters. All materials should be submitted online at Academic Jobs Online (https://academicjobsonline.org). For inquiries and e-mail correspondence please write to jimclark@duke.edu or alan@stat.duke.edu.
