MS for Statistical Science PhD Students

MS en route to PhD

PhD students in Statistical Science may obtain the MS degree in Statistical Science en route to the PhD. A student must satisfy the Graduate School MS requirements of 30 units of graduate credit which  must include at least 18 units from graded STA courses, while there is no specific requirement for credit from non-STA courses. The PhD Preliminary Examination serves as completion exercise and the MS degree will be awarded based on passing the Prelim that semester. Students must register intent to receive the MS with the Graduate School in advance of the Prelim.

Terminal MS

In certain cases, a student satisfying the Graduate School MS requirement of 30 units of graduate credit may be awarded a terminal MS degree in Statistical Science, representing completion of graduate studies in the department. For such students, the 30 units of graduate credit must include at least 18 units from graded STA courses, while there is no specific requirement for credit from non-STA courses. In these cases, the Statistical Science First Year Exam (FYE) serves as the completion exercise. Performance in the FYE must be judged by the graduate faculty of the department to be consistent with MS level achievement; the student will then pass the FYE at MS level.  Students must register intent to receive the MS with the Graduate School
